PhD Position: Robust Data Retrieval for DNA-Based Data Storage (RobDNA)
Develop innovative algorithms for robust data retrieval in DNA-based storage systems to address challenges in error correction and compression.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in signal/image processing, optimization, and programming, and an interest in information theory and source coding.
Overview
This PhD position at Inria’s Rennes Centre focuses on advancing DNA-based data storage by designing algorithms for robust data retrieval. With global data volumes projected to reach 180 zettabytes annually, traditional storage technologies struggle to scale sustainably. DNA storage offers unparalleled density, longevity, and energy efficiency, but practical implementation requires overcoming key challenges like error-prone sequencing and data reconstruction. The project will explore hybrid approaches combining constrained DNA sequences with error-correction techniques tailored for nanopore sequencing, leveraging quaternary alphabet properties and integrating compression algorithms. The work will build on non-binary channel coding and DNA-specific transcoding, aiming to enable scalable, accurate DNA data retrieval.
