PhD Studentship: Source-Independent Protection for Inverter-Dominated Power Networks
Develop innovative protection methods for modern power networks dominated by inverter-based resources.
Best for:Best for electrical engineering graduates or researchers with a strong background in power systems, power electronics, or control engineering, eager to contribute to next-generation grid protection solutions.
Overview
This fully funded PhD position at the University of Manchester focuses on advancing protection strategies for power networks increasingly reliant on inverter-based resources (IBRs) like renewables and battery storage. The project will involve modelling, algorithm development, laboratory prototyping, and real-time simulation to ensure reliable fault detection regardless of generation technology. The successful candidate will join the esteemed Power Systems Group, gaining access to cutting-edge facilities and opportunities for academic publication and professional engagement with bodies like IEEE and IET. The role is ideal for engineers and researchers passionate about power systems and protection technologies.
What you'll do
- Develop protection methods for inverter-dominated power networks that are reliable regardless of generation technology or converter control strategy.
- Conduct power system and IBR modelling to simulate fault behaviour under varying conditions.
- Design and prototype protection algorithms in the laboratory.
- Validate protection methods using real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing on RTDS platforms.
- Collaborate with professional bodies such as IEEE, IET, and CIGRE to disseminate research findings.
- Publish research outcomes in leading academic journals and present at international conferences.
