PhD Research Fellow in Mathematics (Quantum Computing)
Explore theoretical mathematics for fault-tolerant quantum computing as part of the QSTAR Centre at the University of Oslo.
Best for:Best for graduate mathematicians or physicists with a strong foundation in operator algebras, representation theory, or quantum information theory.
Overview
The Department of Mathematics at the University of Oslo invites applications for a three-to-four-year PhD Research Fellow position within the QSTAR Centre for Quantum Computing and Applications. The successful candidate will investigate theoretical questions in fault-tolerant quantum computation, focusing either on tensor categories and quantum groups or on group theory, representation theory, and operator algebras to construct novel quantum codes. The role involves collaborative research within the Operator Algebra group alongside teaching or related departmental tasks if a fourth year is undertaken. Candidates are expected to hold a strong master's degree in mathematics or physics and demonstrate exceptional academic credentials.
What you'll do
- Investigate applications of tensor category theory and quantum groups to problems related to topological quantum computation.
- Explore connections between quantum information theory and noncommutative geometry through the study of quantum channels as noise models.
- Collaborate closely with researchers specializing in operator algebras and quantum information theory.
- Participate in the activities of a multidisciplinary research group spanning mathematics, quantum chemistry, and theoretical physics.
- Contribute to departmental teaching, supervision, or research assistance duties if a fourth fellowship year is approved.
