Hydrogen Systems and Enabling Technologies – Master’s Programme
Europe’s first interdisciplinary master’s programme covering the entire hydrogen value chain, with mandatory study abroad semesters.
Best for:Best for engineering, energy, or sustainability graduates seeking a hands-on, industry-integrated master’s programme with international mobility and a focus on green hydrogen technologies.
Overview
This two-year master’s programme at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is the first in Europe to comprehensively address the hydrogen value chain, from production to storage, distribution, and end-use applications. Collaborating with five European universities and five hydrogen companies, the Hydrogen Systems and Enabling Technologies (HySET) programme offers a multidisciplinary curriculum blending engineering, energy systems, and sustainability. Students will spend at least one semester at two partner institutions, gaining international exposure and industry connections. The programme is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the green hydrogen sector, which is projected to create over a million jobs in Europe by 2030. Graduates will be equipped to drive the transition to a low-emission society by decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors through innovative hydrogen solutions.
What you'll do
- Study the full hydrogen value chain, from production (e.g., electrolysis) to end-use applications in industry and transportation.
- Complete coursework in hydrogen systems engineering, energy conversion, and sustainability science at NTNU and partner universities.
- Spend at least one semester abroad at two European partner institutions to gain international exposure and cross-cultural collaboration experience.
- Engage in hands-on projects and case studies addressing real-world challenges in hydrogen deployment and integration.
- Develop a master’s thesis focused on a hydrogen-related research topic, supervised by academic and industry mentors.
- Participate in industry collaborations, workshops, and networking events with hydrogen companies.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary teamwork, combining technical, economic, and policy perspectives on hydrogen systems.
