Associate Scientist/Scientist - Wet Lab Research, Influenza Virology
Lead wet-lab operations and independent research in influenza virology for the newly established Kosinski Lab at St. Jude.
Best for:Best for experienced virology researchers with strong mammalian cell culture expertise and laboratory management experience.
Overview
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking a highly motivated Associate Scientist or Scientist to join the newly established Kosinski Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Jan Kosinski. The appointee will serve as the scientific and operational leader of the lab's wet-lab program, assisting in establishing infrastructure and launching operations following the lab's relocation from EMBL Hamburg in January 2027. The role involves an approximately equal emphasis on hands-on research into influenza A virus infection cycles and structural biology alongside laboratory management, supervision, and training. Candidates are expected to combine robust technical expertise in virology and cell biology with an entrepreneurial mindset to shape a world-class research program.
What you'll do
- Lead and manage cell culture, virus propagation, and influenza virology operations under BSL-2 containment conditions.
- Generate recombinant and tagged influenza viruses using reverse genetics and develop stable or CRISPR-engineered cell lines.
- Perform essential molecular biology and protein biochemistry techniques such as cloning, transfections, immunoprecipitations, and western blotting.
- Conduct fluorescence and confocal microscopy experiments, analyze datasets, and maintain comprehensive research documentation.
- Head the initial setup and commissioning of the new laboratory, including equipment procurement, safety compliance, and SOP development.
- Manage daily laboratory resources, reagent inventories, and adherence to environmental health and safety regulations.
- Train, onboard, and mentor junior laboratory personnel, research staff, and trainees in experimental protocols and best practices.
Requirements
Degree required: Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific area such as cell biology, virology, biochemistry, or molecular biology; PhD strongly preferred
Language: English; professional proficiency required
Instruction: English
Publications: Contributions to manuscripts, scientific publications, and grant applications are expected.
- Extensive hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture and maintenance of cell lines
- Proficiency in influenza virology techniques including virus propagation and titration assays
- Demonstrated background in BSL-2 laboratory operations and safety compliance
- Solid foundation in molecular biology procedures like cloning, transfections, and CRISPR engineering
- Experience executing protein biochemistry workflows such as western blotting and immunoprecipitation
- Meant for candidates meeting minimum experience criteria based on degree held (e.g., 3 years with PhD, 6 years with Master's, 8 years with Bachelor's for Scientist level)
