PhD position in Smart Ocean Observations and Drift Modelling for Marine Applications
Develop advanced drift modelling frameworks and smart ocean observation tools for marine safety and digital ocean twins.
Best for:Best for candidates with an MSc in data science, physics, or oceanography and a strong interest in machine learning and marine instrumentation.
Overview
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) is offering a four-year PhD position focused on smart ocean observations and drift modelling. The project involves developing directional buoys with telemetry and integrating observational data into the OpenDrift framework using machine learning techniques. The successful candidate will contribute to the EU-FUSION project and the WaveForce project, aiming to enhance marine safety and support the European Digital Twin of the Ocean. The role includes a 25% duty component involving operational metocean activities and software development. The candidate will be enrolled at the University of Bergen and work within a dynamic research environment.
What you'll do
- Design and develop small directional buoys with telemetry for coastal wave-current interaction studies.
- Integrate observational data into the OpenDrift modelling framework using machine learning.
- Perform field work at sea and along the coast to deploy and maintain oceanographic sensors.
- Contribute to the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (EDITO) platform integration.
- Develop and maintain open-access datasets and visualization tools for metocean data.
- Collaborate with international stakeholders to improve ocean monitoring and prediction systems.
- Perform 25% duty work related to operational metocean studies and software tool development.
