PhD Position in Inverse Modelling of Greenhouse Gases and Radioactivity
Investigate atmospheric transport processes and apply inverse modelling to quantify greenhouse gas and radionuclide emissions.
Best for:Best for atmospheric science or physics graduates with strong programming skills and an interest in numerical modeling and inverse techniques.
Overview
The Department of Meteorology and Geophysics at the University of Vienna offers a four-year PhD position within the research group “Atmospheric Transport Processes,” led by Prof. Andreas Stohl. Working in the framework of the Vienna Network for Atmospheric Research (VINAR), the successful candidate will perform Lagrangian transport simulations using FLEXPART and apply advanced inverse modeling techniques to constrain emissions of greenhouse gases and radionuclides. The doctoral researcher will also enroll in the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS), engage in collaborative research with Geosphere Austria, contribute to teaching activities, and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals.
What you'll do
- Simulate atmospheric transport using the Lagrangian model FLEXPART.
- Quantify greenhouse gas emissions based on flux, concentration, and remote sensing measurements.
- Estimate radionuclide emissions from historical nuclear events using concentration and deposition data.
- Contribute to the further development of the FLEXPART model and inverse modelling algorithms.
- Publish scientific results in peer-reviewed international journals.
- Teach classes within the bachelor or master programs in Meteorology.
- Collaborate with researchers at the University of Vienna, Geosphere Austria, and other partner institutions.
- Participate actively in the doctoral training events of the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS).
