PhD Project: Developing Clinker Phase Dissolution Equations for Cement Hydration Models
Develop innovative thermodynamic models for modern cement hydration using advanced analytical techniques.
Best for:Best for civil/structural engineering graduates with a strong interest in materials science and thermodynamic modelling.
Overview
This PhD project focuses on advancing cement hydration modelling by creating new dissolution equations for modern cements blended with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Current empirical methods, developed for Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), are outdated for contemporary cements containing limestone, pulverised fuel ash (PFA), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). The research will generate numerical equations using quantitative XRD (QXRD) and Rietveld analysis, validate them with thermodynamic models, and compare predictions with further QXRD measurements. The project leverages existing expertise in cement hydration modelling at Technological University Dublin to disseminate findings widely.
What you'll do
- Develop new numerical equations for clinker phase dissolution in modern cements using quantitative XRD and Rietveld analysis.
- Conduct comprehensive experimental analysis to measure dissolution curves over time for various SCMs.
- Validate and refine thermodynamic models by comparing predictions with further QXRD measurements.
- Collaborate with the supervisory team to disseminate research findings through academic publications and conferences.
- Contribute to advancing sustainable cement production methods by improving hydration models.
