Smoldering-Assisted Pyrolysis of Municipal Solid Waste for High-Value Liquid Fuel
Develop an integrated slow combustion pyrolysis system to convert municipal solid waste into valuable liquid fuels.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in fluid mechanics or process engineering with a strong background in heat transfer.
Overview
Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse is offering a PhD position focused on developing a novel, integrated slow combustion (smoldering) pyrolysis system for the valorization of municipal solid waste. The project aims to utilize the self-sustaining exothermic oxidation of carbonaceous waste to supply the thermal energy required for pyrolysis, minimizing fossil energy inputs and yielding high-value liquid fuels. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and process engineering to establish an energy-efficient waste-to-fuel pathway. Applicants are expected to conduct rigorous experimental and analytical research, maintain active scientific collaboration, and contribute to sustainability goals.
What you'll do
- Design and develop an integrated slow combustion pyrolysis system for municipal solid waste treatment.
- Investigate heat transfer and fluid dynamics phenomena during the self-sustaining smoldering process.
- Optimize reaction parameters to maximize the yield and quality of high-value liquid fuels.
- Analyze thermal profiles and energy balances to minimize external energy inputs.
- Prepare research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at international conferences.
