PhD Studentship in Data-Driven Precision Medicine for Inpatient Diabetes
Improve inpatient diabetes care using electronic patient records and machine learning.
Best for:Best for data science and computer science graduates interested in healthcare analytics, machine learning, and clinical precision medicine.
Overview
The University of Exeter is offering a four-year PhD studentship focused on advanced blood glucose analytics and inpatient diabetes care as part of the GW4 BioMed3 MRC Doctoral Landscape Programme. The project addresses the high prevalence of diabetes in NHS hospitals by leveraging electronic patient records and glucometrics to quantify adverse glycaemia. The successful candidate will apply data science and machine learning techniques to evaluate clinical complications, build predictive models, and identify high-risk patients. The student will be expected to conduct rigorous research aimed at individualizing hospital care and enhancing patient safety.
What you'll do
- Process and analyze large-scale electronic patient record datasets to study inpatient blood glucose patterns.
- Develop and apply standardized 'glucometrics' methodologies to quantify adverse glycaemia events in hospital settings.
- Evaluate the impact of unstable blood sugar levels on patient clinical complications and overall hospital safety.
- Design, train, and validate machine learning models to identify hospital patients at high risk of adverse outcomes.
- Collaborate with clinical and academic partners to translate research findings into individualised hospital care strategies.
- Prepare research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present outcomes at academic conferences.
