Doctoral Candidate in Aerogels from Non-Gelling Biopolymers
Develop innovative food-grade biopolymer aerogels using cryo-structuring and supercritical CO₂ drying within a Marie Skłodowska-Curie network.
Best for:Best for chemical engineering or materials science graduates with a background in biopolymers, drying technologies, or porous materials.
Overview
The Institute of Thermal Separation Processes at TUHH invites applications for a doctoral candidate position focused on creating innovative food-grade aerogels from non-gelling biopolymers. The successful candidate will employ cryo-structuring, cryo-solvent exchange, and supercritical CO₂ drying to establish sustainable solid networks without chemical crosslinkers. The role involves systematically analyzing how formulation and processing conditions influence material properties such as porosity, mechanical behavior, and hydration. Additionally, the researcher will participate in network meetings, training activities, and planned secondments across partner organizations.
What you'll do
- Conduct research on the development, characterization, and validation of food-grade, bio-based, and biodegradable aerogels
- Plan, execute, document, and analyze experimental laboratory work using relevant analytical and processing methods
- Participate actively in network meetings, workshops, training schools, and transferable-skills seminars
- Complete planned secondments at designated FAroGels partner organizations
- Collaborate effectively with academic and non-academic partners across the research network
