Research Associate / PhD Candidate in Silicon Crystal Growth Simulation
Join a joint PhD project developing numerical models and AI techniques for high-purity silicon crystal growth in magnetic fields.
Best for:Best for graduate students in physics or engineering with strong backgrounds in CFD, numerical modeling, and python programming.
Overview
This shared PhD position is jointly offered by the German Center for Astrophysics (DZA) and the Leibniz-Institute for Crystal Growth (IKZ). The successful candidate will focus on numerical simulation, process scale-up, and optimization of silicon crystal growth under magnetic fields for future gravitational-wave detectors like the Einstein Telescope. The role combines advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), heat transfer, and machine learning methodologies. The researcher will be employed by DZA and primarily conduct research at IKZ in Berlin under joint supervision.
What you'll do
- Develop and apply numerical models for silicon crystal growth processes operating under magnetic fields.
- Investigate coupled thermal, fluid-dynamic, and electromagnetic processes using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
- Analyze melt flow behavior, heat and mass transport, and crystal-melt interface characteristics influenced by magnetic fields.
- Formulate simulation approaches for scaling up silicon crystal growth to larger diameters.
- Execute comprehensive parameter studies and evaluate simulation outputs to optimize manufacturing workflows.
- Integrate machine learning and artificial intelligence methods to accelerate and enhance data-driven crystal growth modeling.
- Collaborate closely with experimental teams at IKZ, scientists at DZA, and international project partners.
- Disseminate scientific outcomes through peer-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations.
