PhD Position: Characterization of Composite Materials for Orthopedic Implants
Join an MSCA Doctoral Network to develop next-generation patient-specific shoulder implants through advanced material characterization.
Best for:Biomedical or materials engineering graduates with a strong background in experimental characterization and in vitro biological testing.
Overview
Semmelweis University is seeking a highly motivated doctoral candidate to join the MSCA Doctoral Network 'CUSTOM'. This project focuses on the development of patient-specific shoulder implants by integrating computational design, additive manufacturing, and rigorous testing. The successful applicant will lead the material characterization phase, investigating the physico-chemical properties, degradation, and biocompatibility of advanced composite materials. The role involves extensive collaboration with international partners, including research stays at the University of Nottingham and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The candidate will contribute to both research and educational activities within the Department of Biophysics and Radiation Biology.
What you'll do
- Conduct a comprehensive literature review on current shoulder implant materials and novel bioactive glasses.
- Develop and execute a testing plan for the physico-chemical characterization and degradation assessment of implant materials.
- Perform in vitro cytotoxicity and biocompatibility assays using human and animal cell lines.
- Investigate implant degradation, wear-induced particle release, and intracellular tracking of degradation products.
- Collaborate with international partners during two research secondments in the UK and Hungary.
- Contribute to departmental teaching activities, including practical sessions and master thesis supervision.
Requirements
Degree required: Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or a closely related field.
