Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology – Biomedical Engineering Specialisation
Interdisciplinary master’s programme blending engineering, natural sciences, and medicine to advance medical diagnostics and therapeutic technologies.
Best for:Best for graduates in electrical engineering or related fields seeking a research-oriented master’s degree with a focus on biomedical applications and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Overview
This specialised master’s programme at Ruhr-Universität Bochum combines electrical engineering, information technology, and biomedical sciences to prepare students for careers in medical technology and related industries. Over four semesters, students explore advanced imaging techniques, signal processing, and image analysis, with modules covering ultrasound, tomography, and machine/deep learning applications. The curriculum emphasises both theoretical knowledge and hands-on research, including a six-month master’s thesis. Graduates are equipped to tackle complex challenges in medical engineering, automotive, and process engineering, or pursue doctoral studies. The programme is fully taught in English, with optional German-language electives, and supports international students through study-abroad opportunities and intercultural training.
What you'll do
- Develop advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in biomedical imaging techniques, signal processing, and image analysis.
- Engage in hands-on research through laboratory practicals and a six-month master’s thesis project.
- Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration between engineering, natural sciences, and medicine to address medical challenges.
- Apply engineering principles to develop innovative solutions for medical diagnostics and therapeutic procedures.
- Conduct scientific literature reviews and critical analysis of research problems in biomedical engineering.
- Present research findings in colloquium lectures, demonstrating effective communication and argumentation skills.
