PhD student in soft matter - PlasticPhase: Micro and Nanoplastics as Modulators of Phase Separation
Investigate the impact of micro- and nanoplastics on biomolecular condensates and protein aggregation.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in soft matter, biophysics, or physical chemistry and an interest in biological systems.
Overview
This PhD position is part of the PRISM programme at Paris Sciences & Lettres (PSL) University, focusing on sustainable soft matter science. The research project investigates how micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) influence intracellular phase behavior and biomolecular condensates, which are linked to neurodegenerative diseases. The successful candidate will employ advanced biophysical techniques to study these interactions in both synthetic model systems and living cells. The role involves an interdisciplinary approach, combining chemistry, physics, and biology to understand the molecular consequences of plastic pollution on human health.
What you'll do
- Construct model condensates using engineered protein scaffolds for in vitro and in cellulo observation.
- Generate and characterize a tunable library of micro- and nanoplastics with controlled size, charge, and surface chemistry.
- Quantify the influence of MNP characteristics on nucleation rates, growth dynamics, and condensate properties.
- Perform live-cell imaging and Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching (FRAP) to measure molecular exchange rates.
- Conduct microrheology experiments to assess viscoelastic changes in the cytoplasm induced by particle exposure.
- Compare in vitro and cellular data to distinguish between direct physical effects and indirect stress responses.
