PhD Position in Experimental Physics: Photonics and Materials Science
Fully funded PhD position in experimental physics focusing on ultrafast photonics and metamaterials at Umeå University.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in physics or optics with an interest in ultrafast photonics and experimental research.
Overview
Umeå University invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Experimental Physics, focusing on photonics and materials science. The project investigates ultrafast optical logic, memory concepts, and spatiotemporal metamaterials through international collaboration within the MSCA Doctoral Network SPARK. The successful candidate will design metamaterial structures, perform advanced optical experiments, and participate in secondments at partner institutions. Applicants are expected to hold a relevant master's degree and demonstrate a strong background in physics or optics.
What you'll do
- Design and fabricate advanced metamaterial structures coupled to quantum emitters for ultrafast information processing
- Conduct ultrafast pump-push-probe experiments with high temporal resolution to study light-matter interactions
- Analyze experimental data and perform finite-element simulations or quantum modeling to interpret optical phenomena
- Participate in structured research-specific and transferable-skills training courses within the SPARK network
- Complete international research and industrial secondments at partner organizations and academic institutions
- Prepare scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at international conferences
