PhD Position on Hydrogen Impurities in Synthetic Diamond
Investigate hydrogen contamination and its passivation effects in synthetic diamond films for quantum and power applications.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in materials science, chemistry, or physics with a strong background in spectroscopy and materials characterization.
Overview
This doctoral project investigates the role of hydrogen impurities and associated defects in synthetic diamond grown via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Funded by the ANR HyFunDia project and hosted at the Institut de Recherche de Chimie Paris, the research aims to control hydrogen incorporation during and after growth to improve functional diamond properties. The successful candidate will employ advanced analytical and spectroscopic techniques, such as micro-FTIR, ERDA, SIMS, and EPR, to study hydrogen diffusion and its interaction with color centers like the NV center. The role requires close collaboration within a highly interdisciplinary consortium of materials scientists, mineralogists, and geochemists.
What you'll do
- Synthesize diamond layers using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) under various experimental conditions
- Evaluate hydrogen content and impurity profiles using advanced analytical and spectroscopic methods including micro-FTIR, ERDA, SIMS, and EPR
- Perform post-growth treatments such as ion implantation and thermal annealing to study defect diffusion and passivation
- Analyze the interaction between hydrogen and color centers, particularly the NV center, for quantum sensing applications
- Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary project partners across materials science and geochemistry laboratories
