PhD Position in Tropospheric Oxidized Nitrogen Chemistry
Explore and model the complex cycling of oxidized nitrogen in the troposphere using global 3D models and observational datasets.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in atmospheric science, chemistry, or related disciplines, who possess programming skills and experience in global modeling or data analysis.
Overview
This PhD position at ETH Zurich’s Atmospheric Chemistry group focuses on improving global models to represent the poorly understood cycling of oxidized nitrogen in the troposphere. The project involves developing and testing simulations against airborne, surface, and satellite observations to assess the impacts of changing NOx emissions over time. The successful candidate will work with advanced global modeling tools (GEOS-Chem and CESM) and large observational datasets, contributing to both fundamental atmospheric science and climate research. The position offers opportunities for scientific communication, conference presentations, and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students under the supervision of Prof. Colette Heald.
What you'll do
- Develop and refine global 3D atmospheric models to better represent the cycling of oxidized nitrogen in the troposphere.
- Analyze and integrate airborne, surface, and satellite observational datasets to validate and improve model simulations.
- Investigate the historical and projected impacts of changing NOx emissions on tropospheric chemistry and climate.
- Present research findings at international conferences and contribute to scientific publications.
- Supervise and mentor bachelor’s and master’s students in atmospheric science projects.
- Collaborate with group members in biweekly meetings and participate in the institute’s seminar series.
