Master’s in Physical and Environmental Geography
Explore climate change, geohazards, and sustainable landscapes through fieldwork, GIS, and independent research projects.
Best for:Best for geography graduates or related disciplines seeking hands-on fieldwork experience, GIS expertise, and interdisciplinary research in climate and environmental science.
Overview
This two-year Master’s programme at the University of Bergen focuses on understanding and addressing critical challenges like climate change, geohazards, and sustainable land use. Students engage in hands-on fieldwork, data analysis (including GIS, LIDAR, and remote sensing), and independent research projects under expert supervision. The curriculum blends theoretical coursework with practical applications, such as sediment analysis, hydrology, and landscape development. Fieldwork (2–4 weeks) is integrated into the programme, and students can specialise in topics like glaciers, natural hazards, or urban ecology. The interdisciplinary environment fosters collaboration between physical and human geographers, preparing graduates for careers in research, policy, or private sector roles.
What you'll do
- Conduct independent research projects under faculty supervision, culminating in a 60 ECTS Master’s thesis.
- Gather and analyse field data using methods like sediment coring, LIDAR, drone imagery, and GIS tools.
- Develop project descriptions and milestones for your thesis, with structured feedback from supervisors.
- Participate in fieldwork (2–4 weeks) between semesters, focusing on topics like glaciers, natural hazards, or hydrology.
- Engage in interdisciplinary coursework, including lectures, seminars, lab work, and excursions to deepen methodological skills.
- Collaborate with peers and faculty on group projects, workshops, and student-led initiatives (e.g., Terra/Geoklubben events).
- Present research findings orally and in writing, developing skills for academic and professional communication.
- Explore optional exchanges at UNIS in Svalbard or other University of Bergen departments in your second semester.
