PhD in Higgs Boson Physics with CMS at École Polytechnique
Join a cutting-edge CMS experiment team to analyze LHC Run-3 data and develop next-generation calorimeter trigger systems for HL-LHC.
Best for:Best for physicists with a strong background in particle physics, programming skills, and a passion for experimental high-energy physics.
Overview
This PhD position offers an opportunity to work at the frontier of particle physics within the CMS experiment at CERN. The successful candidate will investigate the Higgs boson through its H→ZZ decay channel using proton-proton collision data from LHC Run 3, aiming to improve precision measurements of Higgs production cross-sections and couplings. The role combines advanced physics analysis with technical contributions to the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade, specifically developing low-latency trigger algorithms for the High-Granularity Calorimeter. The candidate will engage in collaborative research, contribute to international data analyses, and participate in the preparation for HL-LHC operations.
What you'll do
- Analyze proton-proton collision data from LHC Run 3 to study Higgs boson decays in the H→ZZ channel
- Develop and optimize signal extraction techniques, including machine learning methods, for precision Higgs measurements
- Combine results with data from previous LHC runs and ATLAS experiment for comprehensive analyses
- Design and validate advanced trigger primitive generation algorithms for the CMS High-Granularity Calorimeter
- Ensure algorithm performance under extreme pileup conditions for HL-LHC operations
- Collaborate with international CMS teams on data analysis and hardware development
- Present research findings at conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals
- Contribute to the technical documentation and software frameworks for trigger system upgrades
