Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Vaccine Discovery
Develop scalable computational platforms for peptide-based malaria vaccine design within an interdisciplinary research team.
Best for:Best for postdoctoral researchers with expertise in computational biology, machine learning, and scalable data engineering, particularly those passionate about vaccine development and malaria research.
Overview
This postdoctoral position at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine focuses on advancing computational vaccine discovery for malaria. The successful candidate will design and implement scalable decision platforms for peptide-based vaccine prioritisation, integrating large-scale biological data, machine learning, and high-performance computing. The role involves close collaboration with international researchers, experimental data calibration, and the creation of reusable research outputs. The project leverages a Gates Foundation grant to accelerate vaccine translation, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to a critical global health challenge.
What you'll do
- Develop scalable, tested, and documented workflows for malaria peptide evaluation, MHC class I and II predictions, and multi-omics integration across large datasets.
- Combine antigen-presentation methods with HLA population coverage, parasite variation, and other evidence layers to improve predictive models.
- Design transparent scoring, filtering, and optimisation approaches to help collaborators compare and prioritise peptide candidates.
- Collaborate with international researchers to provide technical support, scientific interpretation, and reusable research outputs (pipelines, datasets, documentation, publications).
- Assess prediction performance using experimental data and iteratively refine prioritisation methods.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, scientific reports, and peer-reviewed publications.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in a quantitative or life-science discipline, or equivalent substantial experience delivering advanced computational research or data-science projects
Language: English (proficiency assumed for academic collaboration)
Instruction: English
- Strong programming skills, preferably in Python, with sound software-engineering practices
- Experience analysing or managing large, complex biological or biomedical datasets
- Proficiency in statistical analysis, machine learning, and quantitative method development
- Experience building reproducible workflows and analytical pipelines, ideally using HPC or cloud computing environments
- No explicit eligibility restrictions mentioned beyond PhD or equivalent experience
