Research Technician in Genomic Adaptation and Speciation
Support cutting-edge genomic research on intertidal snail adaptation and speciation using advanced sequencing technologies.
Best for:Best for technicians with expertise in DNA extraction, long-read sequencing (ONT/PacBio), and Illumina library preparation, seeking hands-on genomic research experience in a collaborative academic environment.
Overview
This position at UCL’s Division of Biosciences offers a hands-on role in genomic research focused on understanding the genetic basis of adaptation and speciation in intertidal snails (*Littorina*). The successful candidate will lead DNA extraction, long-read sequencing library preparation (ONT/PacBio), and Illumina sequencing projects, while contributing to broader lab operations. The role aligns with the Darwin Tree of Life project and involves collaboration with international partners. Ideal for technicians with molecular biology and sequencing expertise, this position provides professional development opportunities, training funds, and access to conferences. The role is based in London and offers flexible working arrangements (full-time or part-time).
What you'll do
- Lead implementation of DNA extraction protocols for high molecular weight DNA from intertidal snails (*Littorina*), following Darwin Tree of Life project standards.
- Prepare long-read sequencing libraries (ONT/PacBio) and assist with DNA/RNA extraction and Illumina sequencing library preparation.
- Conduct quality control (QC) for sequencing samples and process downstream long/short-read sequence data.
- Assist with snail rearing, general lab organization, and training of staff and students.
- Collaborate with project partners at other research institutions and participate in international conferences.
- Support research projects focused on understanding the genomic basis of adaptation and speciation.
Requirements
Degree required: Not explicitly required, but relevant technical experience or vocational training in molecular biology, genetics, or a related field is essential.
Language: English (proficiency required for communication and documentation in the lab).
Instruction: English
- Experience with development and customization of DNA extraction protocols and quality control (QC).
- Hands-on experience with long-read sequencing (ONT/PacBio) and Illumina sequencing library preparation.
- Familiarity with operating ONT sequencers and downstream processing of sequencing data.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a laboratory setting.
- No formal eligibility restrictions beyond technical experience; open to all applicants.
- Flexible working arrangements (full-time or part-time) available.
