Doctoral Student on Carbon Cycling of Primary Forests
Investigate soil carbon dynamics and forest management impacts in primary and managed boreal forests at Lund University.
Best for:Best for quantitative environmental science or ecology graduates with strong programming, GIS, and fieldwork interests.
Overview
Lund University invites applications for a doctoral student position focusing on the carbon cycling of primary and secondary boreal forests. The project sits within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (MGeo) and aims to understand the complex factors driving soil carbon differences between primary and managed ecosystems. The successful candidate will combine fieldwork, geographical data analysis, spatial modeling, and potentially laboratory soil analyses. The position offers flexibility to align with the candidate's specific interests while contributing crucial insights to global climate change mitigation.
What you'll do
- Collect soil samples and conduct field inventories in primary forests with varying fire histories.
- Analyze spatial data, maps, and historical information using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and statistical models.
- Perform laboratory analyses of soil carbon components, including mineral-associated and particulate organic carbon fractions.
- Model existing carbon storage datasets to evaluate the effects of forest management practices and environmental factors.
- Participate in departmental coursework, third-cycle research studies, and limited teaching or departmental duties up to 20%.
Requirements
Degree required: Master's degree in Science or a technical subject, or completion of courses comprising at least 240 credits with at least 60 second-cycle credits.
Degree offered: PhD
Language: Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
Instruction: English
- Solid foundation in quantitative methods such as mathematics, statistics, and programming.
- Skills in computer-based calculations and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Willingness and physical capability to conduct fieldwork in remote environments.
- Ability to work independently and formulate research problems.
