PhD Position in Generative Modeling of Human Development and Disease
Join a new research group at the University of Basel to develop generative models for single-cell and spatial genomics data.
Best for:Best for quantitative researchers with strong Python/PyTorch skills and an interest in computational biology and generative modeling.
Overview
The Computational Cellular Dynamics (CCD) Lab, led by Marius Lange, is a newly established research group at the University of Basel's Department of Biomedicine and the Basel Research Centre for Child Health. The group focuses on developing generative models to understand human tissue development, maturation, regeneration, and disease mechanisms, with a specific emphasis on child health. The successful candidate will work on single-cell and spatial genomics data, utilizing advanced computational techniques to model cellular dynamics and regulatory principles. This position offers a collaborative environment with access to cutting-edge data generation platforms and clinical samples through hospital partnerships. The role is fully funded for four years and provides an opportunity to contribute to open-source scientific software within a world-class life-science ecosystem.
What you'll do
- Develop and implement generative models for single-cell and spatial genomics data.
- Investigate cell-cell communication mechanisms beyond descriptive analysis.
- Create joint models of gene regulation and cellular dynamics using time-resolved data.
- Design computational interventions to steer cells toward specific molecular states.
- Maintain and contribute to open-source scientific software projects.
- Collaborate with clinical partners to integrate experimental data into computational models.
Requirements
Degree required: MSc in computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, computational biology, or a related quantitative field.
