PhD Position in Molecular Mechanisms of Neurodegenerative Diseases
Investigate the role of FUS and TDP-43 in R-loop regulation and genome stability at the International PhD Programme in Mainz.
Best for:Best for ambitious life science graduates with a master's degree and a strong background in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, or cell biology.
Overview
The International PhD Programme (IPP) in Mainz, Germany, invites talented life science graduates to apply for a fully funded doctoral position at the Institute of Molecular Biology. Working within the research group of Dorothee Dormann, the successful candidate will explore the molecular mechanisms by which neurodegeneration-linked RNA-binding proteins FUS and TDP-43 contribute to R-loop suppression and DNA repair. The project utilizes a combination of in vitro assays, cellular model systems, advanced fluorescence microscopy, and proximity proteomics. The researcher will benefit from state-of-the-art core facilities, comprehensive professional training, and an active international scientific community.
What you'll do
- Investigate the molecular mechanisms by which FUS and TDP-43 contribute to R-loop suppression and DNA repair using in vitro and cellular model systems.
- Examine how the protein interactome of FUS and TDP-43 is altered upon DNA damage using proximity proteomics.
- Analyze the phase separation and condensation behavior of FUS and TDP-43 in relation to DNA/RNA binding and damage site recruitment.
- Study the impact of post-translational modifications such as ADP-ribosylation and phosphorylation on R-loop regulation.
- Perform genome-wide R-loop mapping and advanced fluorescence microscopy or live-cell imaging.
- Collaborate within the RTG on R-loop Regulation in Robustness and Resilience (4R) consortium and present findings at internal and external meetings.
