PhD Position in Metrological Procedures for Quantum Sensors
Develop advanced metrological procedures for diamond-based quantum sensors in an interdisciplinary research environment.
Best for:Best for candidates with a background in applied physics or electrical engineering and a strong interest in quantum photonics and experimental laboratory work.
Overview
This PhD project focuses on the development of metrological procedures to characterize spin defects, specifically NV centers, in monocrystalline diamond nanostructures. The research aims to evaluate how structural defects and nanofabrication processes influence coherence times, which are critical for the performance of quantum sensing technologies. The successful candidate will work within the Interdisciplinary Institute for Technological Innovation (3IT) and the Quantum Institute at the University of Sherbrooke. The role involves close collaboration with industrial and governmental partners to advance quantum sensing for applications in geology, defense, and medical imaging.
What you'll do
- Develop metrological procedures to characterize spin defects in diamond nanostructures.
- Analyze the impact of structural defects and etching processes on coherence times.
- Design and implement experimental setups for coherence time measurements using power broadening methods.
- Perform precise measurements of emission intensity and spin coherence.
- Collaborate with external partners including the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) on nanofabrication studies.
- Transition from simple measurement methods to advanced pulsed measurement techniques.
