Overview

This doctoral position at HydroSciences Montpellier in France focuses on understanding how subsurface architecture and heterogeneity influence hydrological processes, water storage, and low-flow dynamics in mountain watersheds. The successful candidate will combine geophysical field observations with process-based numerical modeling to analyze subsurface structures and flow routing. Working within the HYTAKE team and the OHMCV observatory on Mont-Lozère, the student will develop alternative subsurface representations and evaluate their impact on catchment hydrology. Applicants are expected to hold a Master's degree in geophysics, demonstrate strong programming skills in Python, and possess an interest in fieldwork and numerical simulation.

What you'll do

  • Develop alternative representations of subsurface architecture constrained by field geophysical data.
  • Evaluate the role of subsurface heterogeneity in controlling flow distribution at the hillslope scale.
  • Investigate the primary factors governing stream drying and low-flow dynamics.
  • Conduct field campaigns involving geophysical equipment deployment in outdoor and potentially rugged terrain.
  • Contribute to scientific communication and public outreach regarding the research findings.
