PhD Position in Cavity Nano-Optomechanics with Semiconductor Nanowires
Explore quantum fluctuations and ultra-strong coupling regimes in semiconductor nano-optomechanical systems.
Best for:Best for physics graduates with a strong experimental background in optics, nano-optics, and quantum or condensed matter physics.
Overview
This PhD position at Institut Néel in Grenoble, France, focuses on investigating novel cavity nano-optomechanics regimes using high-finesse microcavities and semiconductor nanowires. The candidate will design, fabricate, and characterize strongly coupled devices where quantum optical fluctuations dominate oscillator dynamics. Working within the Nano-Optics and Forces (NOF) team, the researcher will map optical and mechanical properties at the nanoscale and harness photo-induced charges for enhanced light-matter interactions. The successful applicant will contribute to fundamental quantum optics research and collaborate within a world-class multidisciplinary laboratory environment.
What you'll do
- Design and fabricate high-finesse microcavities and ultra-sensitive force probes based on semiconductor materials such as InP, GaP, and SiC.
- Perform optical and mechanical characterization of nano-resonators at the nanoscale.
- Explore ultra-strong coupling regimes where single cavity photons significantly displace mechanical oscillators.
- Manipulate photo-induced internal excitations and charge transport using electrostatic and radiofrequency fields.
- Analyze experimental data and develop numerical models using Python or C.
- Contribute to scientific publications and present research findings at international conferences.
