PhD Position in Chemistry and AI: UltraHighResNMR Project
Fully funded PhD fellowship to develop AI-enhanced NMR techniques for studying solvate ionic liquids in sustainable energy applications.
Best for:Best for chemistry PhD graduates with a strong background in NMR spectroscopy, computational methods, and an interest in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and AI.
Overview
This PhD position within the PRISM programme at PSL University (Paris) focuses on advancing ultra-high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy using deep learning. The project, titled UltraHighResNMR, aims to enhance NMR resolution for complex ionic liquids—key materials for eco-friendly battery electrolytes—by integrating convolutional neural networks with relaxometry. The successful candidate will collaborate with international partners, including German and Polish research groups, to investigate molecular dynamics and interactions in solvate ionic liquids. The programme offers interdisciplinary training, mobility opportunities, and courses in sustainability and innovation, with a strong emphasis on addressing ecological transition challenges through soft matter science.
What you'll do
- Develop and apply deep learning models (convolutional neural networks) to predict ultra-high-resolution NMR spectra from distorted experimental data.
- Conduct NMR relaxometry experiments on a world-unique 900 MHz spectrometer to study dynamics and interactions in solvate ionic liquids (SILs) and water-in-SILs (WISILs).
- Collaborate with international partners to interpret experimental data using advanced relaxation models and molecular dynamics simulations.
- Participate in secondments at partner institutions (University of Rostock, Poland) for training in molecular dynamics simulations and relaxation theory.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary training in sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, and transferable skills as part of the PRISM programme.
- Publish findings in high-impact scientific journals and present research at international conferences.
- Engage in outreach activities to promote the application of AI-enhanced NMR techniques in soft matter research.
