PhD Position in Radar Glaciology and Greenland Ice Sheet Firn Hydrology
Investigate multi-decadal changes in the Greenland Ice Sheet firn using historical airborne radar data.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in natural sciences with an interest in glaciology, remote sensing, and large observational datasets.
Overview
This PhD project uses airborne radar data collected over the Greenland Ice Sheet since the early 1990s to reconstruct long-term changes in near-surface firn layers. The appointed candidate will examine how intensified melt has altered meltwater storage, map regional ice slabs, and identify englacial drainage pathways linking surface melt to the ice sheet bed. Operating within the ERC-funded FirnMelt project, the researcher will collaborate with an international network of scientists across Europe and integrate findings with upcoming airborne and ground-based campaigns. The position is based at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) Department of Glaciology and Climate in Copenhagen, with doctoral enrollment at the Technical University of Denmark.
What you'll do
- Analyze historical airborne radar data collected over the Greenland Ice Sheet since the early 1990s.
- Map long-term changes in near-surface firn properties, including the regional expansion of ice layers and slabs.
- Identify and map englacial drainage channels connecting surface meltwater to the ice sheet bed.
- Contribute observational datasets to evaluate and improve advanced firn and hydrological models.
- Collaborate with European project partners and integrate findings with planned airborne and ground-based campaigns.
