PhD Position in Structural Biology and Biochemistry of Natural Products
Explore molecular mechanisms of pyrimidine ring assembly in non-ribosomal peptide synthesis for drug discovery.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in structural biology, biochemistry, or chemical biology, interested in drug discovery and molecular mechanisms of natural product biosynthesis.
Overview
This PhD position at the Institut de Biologie Intégrative de la Cellule (I2BC) focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms behind pyrimidine ring formation during the biosynthesis of bleomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic with anticancer properties. The project integrates structural biology, biochemistry, and chemical synthesis to uncover how specialized domains in non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS) cooperate to assemble complex heterocycles. By deciphering these interactions, the research aims to enable rational engineering of NRPS systems for producing novel pyrimidine-containing natural products with improved bioactivity. This work addresses critical challenges in drug resistance and toxicity, offering sustainable solutions for modern medicine. The successful candidate will contribute to a multidisciplinary team at a leading research institute in France.
What you'll do
- Investigate the molecular mechanisms of pyrimidine ring assembly during bleomycin biosynthesis using advanced structural biology techniques.
- Perform biochemical experiments to characterize interactions between NRPS domains and their catalytic functions.
- Apply chemical synthesis methods to validate and support structural findings.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate structural, biochemical, and synthetic data.
