PhD Studentship: How Neurons Shape Astrocytes in Brain Development
Investigate how neuronal signals regulate astrocyte function and neurodevelopmental disorders through an interdisciplinary GW4 BioMed3 MRC studentship.
Best for:Best for life science graduates with a strong background in molecular neuroscience, transcriptomics, and disease modeling.
Overview
The University of Exeter invites applications for a four-year PhD studentship focusing on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of brain development, specifically how neurons instruct astrocytes. Operating within the GW4 BioMed3 Doctoral Landscape Programme, the successful candidate will use mouse models, primary cell culture, transcriptomics, and advanced imaging to decode cell-to-cell communication. The project provides comprehensive cross-institutional training across the Universities of Exeter, Bristol, and Cardiff to uncover links between neuronal JAKMIP1 dysfunction and altered glial behavior. Candidates will benefit from full tuition coverage, a competitive annual stipend, and additional research support funding.
What you'll do
- Design and execute experimental protocols utilizing mouse models and primary astrocyte cultures.
- Perform transcriptomic analyses and advanced imaging to evaluate cellular behavior.
- Investigate the molecular signaling pathways linking neuronal JAKMIP1 dysfunction to glial changes.
- Collaborate across research groups and universities within the GW4 BioMed3 partnership.
- Engage in mandatory doctoral training programs, workshops, and skills development activities.
- Analyze complex datasets using bioinformatics tools and present findings at scientific meetings.
