PhD Candidate in Optical Microscopy for High-Throughput Imaging
Develop revolutionary optical microscopy for sub-cellular imaging of organoids and engineered heart tissues.
Best for:Best for master’s graduates in Physics or Engineering with hands-on experience in optics, microscopy, or optical design, seeking to contribute to cutting-edge biomedical imaging technologies.
Overview
This PhD position at Universitat de Barcelona focuses on advancing optical microscopy to achieve high-resolution, three-dimensional imaging of millimeter-scale biological samples without mechanical scanning or image stitching. The project, funded under the EIC-Pathfinder Open programme, aims to create a low-cost, high-throughput microscope called the In-vitro scope. The successful candidate will primarily engage in experimental development and characterization of this novel microscope while contributing to optical design. Participation in group activities, mentoring, and manuscript preparation is also expected. The position is ideal for master’s graduates in Physics or Engineering with a strong interest in optics and micro/nanoscale phenomena.
What you'll do
- Develop and characterize a novel, low-cost, high-resolution three-dimensional optical microscope (In-vitro scope) capable of imaging millimeter-scale biological samples without mechanical scanning or image stitching.
- Conduct experimental work to advance the microscope’s capabilities for sub-cellular resolution imaging.
- Contribute to optical design and system optimization for high-throughput imaging applications.
- Participate in group activities, including journal clubs, group meetings, and mentoring undergraduate students.
- Receive mentorship in manuscript preparation and grant writing to support academic and research career development.
