PhD Studentship: Resilience to Dementia and Age-Related Disorders
Investigate genetic and molecular mechanisms of cognitive resilience to dementia using large-scale human biobank data.
Best for:Best for aspiring researchers with a strong background in genetics, data science, or epidemiology looking to tackle complex questions in dementia and aging.
Overview
The University of Exeter is offering a four-year MRC-funded PhD studentship as part of the GW4 BioMed3 Doctoral Landscape Programme, commencing in October 2027. The successful candidate will explore why certain individuals remain cognitively healthy despite high genetic risk for dementia, utilizing cutting-edge multi-omic and genetic data from large human biobanks. Working at the intersection of dementia research, genetics, epidemiology, and data science, the researcher will analyze large-scale population datasets and molecular biomarkers. The role is expected to yield new insights into healthy aging biology and potential targets for dementia prevention.
What you'll do
- Analyze large-scale population datasets and genetic biobank data to identify protective molecular factors against dementia.
- Investigate the intersection of dementia research, epidemiology, and molecular biomarkers.
- Collaborate across the GW4 BioMed3 partnership and participate in required research training activities.
- Contribute to the identification of novel targets for dementia prevention and healthy aging biology.
- Prepare research findings for presentation at academic venues and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
