PhD Student in Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography
Develop machine learning methods to improve climate model parameterizations at Stockholm University.
Best for:Best for quantitative graduates with a background in physics, mathematics, or meteorology and a strong interest in machine learning applications for climate science.
Overview
Stockholm University invites applications for a fully-funded PhD position in Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography, focusing on machine learning applications in climate modeling. Working within the Department of Meteorology (MISU), the successful candidate will explore novel ways to bridge micro- and global scales to enhance climate model accuracy and efficiency. The project involves developing data-driven ML models for sub-grid scale processes such as cloud formation, turbulence, and aerosol interactions, in close collaboration with the Swedish e-Science Research Centre. Candidates are expected to conduct independent research, publish findings, and contribute to teaching or departmental duties up to twenty percent.
What you'll do
- Derive and train data-driven machine learning models using observational data and high-resolution climate simulations.
- Couple developed ML parameterizations to large-scale climate models to evaluate performance against traditional methods.
- Estimate climate-relevant quantities such as cloud radiative effects and aerosol-cloud interaction forcing.
- Collaborate closely with data scientists within the Swedish e-Science Research Centre.
- Engage in doctoral coursework, scientific writing, and present findings at international academic conferences.
- Contribute to limited departmental duties including education and administration up to twenty percent of the time.
