PhD Holder in Immunology, Glycobiology, Inflammation
Join an EU-funded project at i3S investigating glycan-driven transitions from health to chronic intestinal inflammation.
Best for:Best for early-career PhD holders in life sciences with specialized expertise in glycobiology, immunology, and molecular biology.
Overview
The Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S) is seeking a PhD holder to conduct research on the GLYCANTRIGGER project, focusing on how glycosylation changes in the gut mucosa trigger chronic intestinal inflammation in Crohn's disease. Working within the Immunology, Cancer & GlycoMedicine group, the researcher will employ molecular and cellular biology techniques to explore host-microbiome interactions and mucosal immunology. The successful candidate will design and execute experiments, contribute to scientific publications, and help develop novel predictive and preventive tools. This is a 12-month fixed-term research position based in Porto, Portugal, starting December 2026.
What you'll do
- Conduct independent and collaborative research investigating the transition from health to chronic intestinal inflammation within the GLYCANTRIGGER project
- Perform in vitro assays, cell culture work, and molecular biology procedures including PCR, western blotting, and flow cytometry
- Execute immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence analyses on mucosal tissue samples
- Analyze and interpret experimental data relating to host-microbiome interactions and glyco-immunology
- Draft scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at project meetings and conferences
- Collaborate with team members on immunological assays involving co-culture systems and animal models if applicable
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in Life and Health Sciences, Biomedicine, Immunology, Biology, Glycobiology, Biochemistry or a related field
Language: English; strong written and spoken proficiency
Instruction: English
Publications: Relevant scientific publications in the project's research area preferred
- Demonstrated research experience in glycobiology and glyco-immunology fields
- Hands-on competency in molecular biology and cellular assay techniques
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an international research team
- Immediate availability to initiate the contract
- Open to applicants holding a PhD with reduced post-doctoral experience or without a post-doctoral scientific curriculum
