Research Associate in Mycobacterial Biochemistry & Microbiology
Investigate mycobacterial bioenergetics and membrane proteins to combat Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Best for:Best for postdoctoral researchers with strong backgrounds in bacteriology, membrane protein biochemistry, and bioenergetics.
Overview
The University of York is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the York Bioenergetics Lab within the Department of Chemistry and the York Structural Biology Laboratory. The position focuses on understanding how mycobacteria, particularly Mycobacterium tuberculosis, transduce energy and respond to novel bioenergetic-targeting antibiotics like bedaquiline and Q203. The successful candidate will employ remission spectroscopy, membrane protein biochemistry, and cryo-EM to progress advanced research projects. This is a fixed-term appointment funded by a UKRI Future Leader Fellowship until October 2028.
What you'll do
- Design and execute research objectives centered on mycobacterial bioenergetics and novel antibiotic responses.
- Culture and genetically modify bacteria, with a specific focus on mycobacteria.
- Purify proteins, focusing on membrane proteins to support structural and functional studies.
- Utilize remission spectroscopy and other analytical techniques to measure cytochrome electron occupancy and cellular responses.
- Collaborate with team members across the York Structural Biology Laboratory and advance existing projects toward completion.
- Prepare and publish rigorous scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals and present outcomes at meetings.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, bacteriology, or a related field, or equivalent experience
Language: English; professional working proficiency
Instruction: English
Publications: Must have published, or will shortly have published, rigorous scientific findings.
- Knowledge of bioenergetics, biochemistry, and microbiology
- Experience of culturing and genetically modifying bacteria
- Experience of protein purification, particularly membrane proteins
- Ability to develop research objectives and manage individual and collaborative projects
- Demonstrated track record or imminent output of published scientific findings
