PhD Position in Human Neural Circuit Investigation
Funded 4-year PhD to explore human brain circuit properties using surgical tissue samples and advanced neuroscience techniques.
Best for:Best for neuroscientists or biochemists with hands-on experience in molecular/cellular biology and a passion for translational research linking human brain circuits to epilepsy and neurological disorders.
Overview
This fully funded 4-year PhD position at Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB) in Barcelona focuses on investigating human neural circuits using surgically resected brain tissue from epilepsy patients. The successful candidate will apply advanced imaging or patch-clamp electrophysiology techniques to study circuit function and disease alterations. The research team, led by Jake Watson, collaborates closely with the Hospital del Mar’s Epilepsy and Neurosurgery Units to bridge clinical observations with fundamental neuroscience. The position is ideal for candidates with a strong background in neuroscience or related fields, seeking to contribute to translational research with direct clinical relevance. Applicants will work within a multidisciplinary environment at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB).
What you'll do
- Conduct advanced imaging or patch-clamp electrophysiology experiments on surgically resected human brain tissue samples.
- Investigate the functional properties of human neural circuits and their alterations in epilepsy patients.
- Collaborate with clinical teams at Hospital del Mar to link experimental findings with patient disease mechanisms.
- Develop and optimize techniques for analyzing neural circuit function in human tissue.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to the broader research goals of the lab.
