Doctoral Researcher in Geomorphology and Paleoclimatology (GHOST Project)
Investigate the formation of elusive 'ghost sapropels' in Mediterranean sediments using isotopic analysis and numerical modeling.
Best for:Best for geoscientists with a strong background in geochemistry, sedimentology, or paleoclimatology, eager to contribute to interdisciplinary Earth system research.
Overview
This PhD position at the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam focuses on understanding the climatic and oceanic drivers behind the formation of 'ghost sapropels'—organic-carbon-poor sediments in the Mediterranean Sea over the past 3 million years. The project combines sedimentological and geochemical analyses, isotopic measurements, and numerical modeling to explore the processes governing organic carbon loss. The successful candidate will conduct fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and simulations while collaborating with international partners. The role is based in Potsdam with planned research stays in Kiel (Germany) and Paris-Saclay (France).
What you'll do
- Perform isotopic measurements (radiogenic Nd, Sr, Li and stable O, C isotopes) in clean laboratories at GFZ and GEOMAR using mass spectrometry and column chromatography.
- Sample and process sediment cores from ODP sites, extracting specific sedimentary fractions based on chemical and grain-size analyses.
- Design and execute numerical experiments using the FESDIA diagenesis model in collaboration with LSCE (Paris-Saclay).
- Compile and manage published and new sedimentary data, ensuring safe storage and publication as data sets.
- Collaborate with international project partners to integrate expertise and exchange information.
- Publish high-quality scientific papers and present findings at international conferences under supervisor guidance.
