Research Fellow in Electron Microscopy
Join a leading structural biology group to advance high-resolution cryo-EM research on RNA metabolism and gene expression.
Best for:Structural biologists with expertise in single-particle cryo-EM and a strong background in biochemistry or biophysics.
Overview
The University of Birmingham is seeking a Research Fellow to join the integrative structural biology group led by Prof. Teresa Carlomagno. The successful candidate will utilize state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a newly acquired FEI Glacios 3 Cryo-Electron Microscope, to investigate the functional mechanisms of biomolecular complexes. The role involves applying cryo-EM and complementary techniques to study RNA metabolism and gene regulation. Applicants are expected to contribute to experimental design, data analysis, and the dissemination of research findings through high-impact publications.
What you'll do
- Develop and execute research objectives aligned with the laboratory's structural biology program.
- Operate and maintain the cryo-EM microscope for high-resolution data acquisition.
- Perform image processing, 3D reconstruction, and structural analysis of cryo-EM data.
- Produce and purify biomolecular complexes using molecular biology and biochemical techniques.
- Optimize sample preparation and cryo-EM grid preparation protocols.
- Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
- Supervise and mentor PhD students and junior researchers.
- Contribute to the preparation of research funding applications.
