Overview

This doctoral position is jointly hosted by ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) within a dynamic research group focused on accelerator physics and advanced particle sources. The successful candidate will design, commission, and test novel electron source systems, exploring laser shaping, RF compression, and machine-learning optimization to enhance future accelerator facilities like CERN's Future Circular Collider and SwissFEL. Responsibilities include experimental beam measurements, photocathode testing, and collaborative research with teaching assistant duties at ETH Zurich. The applicant is expected to bring a strong background in physics or engineering, conduct rigorous experimental investigations, and enroll in the ETH Doctoral Programme.

What you'll do

  • Commission a new electron source test stand and demonstrate pulse-to-pulse modulation of bunch charge, beam size, and laser pulse energy.
  • Compare laser-shaping techniques through beam measurements, build photocathode operation prototypes, and investigate machine-learning optimization.
  • Study photocathode and laser performance, including the operational lifetime of semiconductor photocathodes at high bunch charges.
  • Measure gains in beam brightness resulting from photocathode laser shaping and RF compression for facility upgrades.
  • Perform teaching assistant duties at ETH Zurich alongside doctoral research activities at PSI Villigen.
