PhD in Multiscale Operando Studies of Solid-State Battery Densification
Explore the fundamental mechanisms of densification in thiophosphate-based solid-state electrolytes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
Best for:Best for physics, materials science, or chemical engineering graduates with a strong interest in experimental research, high-pressure techniques, and operando characterization of battery materials.
Overview
This PhD position at the Institut Lumière Matière (ILM) focuses on investigating the multiscale densification processes of solid-state battery (SSB) materials, specifically thiophosphates, which hold promise for enhancing energy density and safety in lithium-ion batteries. The research will combine experimental techniques in high-pressure densification, in-situ and operando characterization (e.g., Raman spectroscopy, diffraction, and tomography), and collaborations with synchrotrons (SOLEIL, ESRF) and the LEPMI lab in Grenoble. The goal is to optimize fabrication processes and improve the electrochemical performance of SSBs by understanding how microstructure, porosity, and interfaces evolve under pressure and during cycling. The project is part of the collaborative ANR-SoDense initiative, offering a multidisciplinary environment with access to cutting-edge research infrastructure.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental studies on the densification mechanisms of thiophosphate-based solid-state electrolytes using high-pressure techniques.
- Perform in-situ and operando characterization of material microstructure, interfaces, and electrochemical properties using advanced techniques like Raman spectroscopy, diffraction, and synchrotron-based tomography.
- Collaborate with partners at LEPMI (Grenoble) and synchrotrons (SOLEIL, ESRF) to integrate multi-technique experiments and data analysis.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data to correlate fabrication processes, densification conditions, and battery performance.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences and contribute to scientific publications.
- Participate in collaborative workshops and training sessions within the ANR-SoDense project framework.
