PhD Candidate EPIC Project
Investigate innovative endolysin-loaded nanocarriers to combat antimicrobial resistance and biofilm infections.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in microbiology or biomedical sciences with a strong background in biofilm research, molecular biology, or mammalian cell culture.
Overview
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and ACTA are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate for the NWO-funded EPIC consortium project. The successful candidate will examine the antimicrobial efficacy, biosafety, and host compatibility of novel endolysin formulations against implant-associated infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The role involves developing advanced in vitro biofilm models, conducting cellular assays, and collaborating closely with academic and industrial partners. Applicants are expected to hold a relevant master's degree and contribute actively to peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
What you'll do
- Investigate the antimicrobial efficacy and biosafety of endolysin-based formulations against target bacterial strains.
- Evaluate activity against planktonic and biofilm-associated Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, including MRSA.
- Develop advanced in vitro biofilm and infection models, incorporating microfluidic systems.
- Assess activity against intracellular staphylococci and monitor potential resistance development.
- Evaluate cytotoxicity, immune responses, and effects on bone-related cells utilizing human cell culture and 3D tissue models.
- Collaborate effectively with academic and industrial consortium partners.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific conferences.
