Master of Science in Agricultural Biosciences
Interdisciplinary master’s programme addressing global food security, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural production through molecular, computational, and integrative biosciences.
Best for:Best for life sciences graduates with a strong foundation in biology, plant/animal sciences, or molecular biotechnology who seek interdisciplinary training in agricultural research, computational biology, and sustainable food systems.
Overview
The Master of Science in Agricultural Biosciences at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) prepares students to tackle critical challenges in food production, climate change mitigation, and resource preservation. This programme uniquely integrates biological disciplines—such as physiology, genomics, and cell biology—with computational and quantitative methods to study crop and livestock species holistically. Unlike specialised programmes, it adopts a generic approach, emphasising shared biological mechanisms across plants, animals, and microbes. Students gain hands-on experience in molecular and computational techniques, conduct research internships, and complete a thesis in their final semester. The curriculum balances core modules with elective lab courses and a mobility window for international study or research abroad, fostering interdisciplinary expertise and adaptability for careers in academia, industry, or policy.
What you'll do
- Develop a deep understanding of biological processes relevant to agricultural production through core modules in physiology, cell biology, immunology, genetics, and statistical computing.
- Conduct independent research in the field of Agricultural Biosciences, applying molecular, experimental, or computational methods to address specific research questions.
- Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration to link biological research findings with broader societal challenges and demands.
- Develop competencies for navigating complex projects and managing research in dynamic environments, including international settings.
- Participate in elective lab courses focusing on molecular or computational techniques to specialise in specific research areas.
- Complete a Master’s thesis in the fourth semester, addressing a research question through original research and methodological implementation.
- Gain international study experience through exchange programmes or research internships with industry partners or external research organisations.
