PhD Studentship: Decoding Sex Chromosome Effects in the Human Brain
Investigate how sex chromosomes drive molecular differences in brain health and disease using cutting-edge multi-omic datasets.
Best for:Best for bioinformatics and computational biology graduates interested in genomics, neurodegeneration, and multi-omic data analysis.
Overview
The University of Exeter is offering a four-year PhD studentship as part of the GW4 BioMed3 Doctoral Landscape Programme starting in October 2027. This bioinformatics project explores how X and Y chromosomes shape gene expression and epigenetic regulation across human brain development, aging, and neurodegenerative disorders. The successful candidate will leverage multi-omic and single-cell datasets to uncover the biological foundations of sex-specific disease risks. The position provides comprehensive funding covering tuition fees, an annual stipend, and dedicated research training support.
What you'll do
- Analyze cutting-edge multi-omic and single-cell datasets to examine gene expression and epigenetic regulation linked to sex chromosomes.
- Investigate molecular differences at the cellular level driven by X and Y chromosomes across human brain development and aging.
- Examine sex-specific differences in brains affected by neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease.
- Collaborate with international research teams and dynamic internal groups to advance understanding of sex-biased disease risks.
- Participate in advanced research training and professional development activities associated with the doctoral landscape programme.
