PhD Position in Indirect Combustion Noise: CFD and Aeroacoustics
Develop novel CFD-based theories for indirect combustion noise in hydrogen-fueled systems with secondments at TU Delft and ETH Zurich.
Best for:Best for recent MSc graduates in Fluid Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Physics with strong CFD expertise and a passion for combustion and aeroacoustics research.
Overview
This PhD position at the University of Twente focuses on advancing the understanding of indirect combustion noise, particularly for hydrogen-based systems. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the project will investigate vorticity, entropy, and compositional interactions in non-reacting and reacting flows. The research aims to extend existing analytical models and validate findings through simulations (Euler, URANS, LES) and experimental collaborations at TU Delft and ETH Zurich. The candidate will contribute to both theoretical and applied research, bridging numerical modeling and experimental validation in aeroacoustics and combustion science.
What you'll do
- Conduct CFD simulations (Euler, URANS, LES) to study vorticity and entropy interactions in non-reacting and reacting flows.
- Develop analytical/semi-analytical models to predict indirect combustion noise, particularly for hydrogen-fueled systems.
- Compare lower-fidelity CFD models (Euler/URANS) with high-fidelity LES results to assess predictive accuracy.
- Perform numerical analyses on experimental setups from DLR and validate findings through secondments at TU Delft and ETH Zurich.
- Collaborate with researchers at TU Delft to enhance numerical simulation tools for indirect-noise investigations.
- Present research findings at conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Participate in academic and professional development activities within the university.
