Overview

This doctoral position at GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences focuses on integrating ring laser technology with space geodetic techniques (VLBI and LLR) to refine Earth orientation parameters and lunar ephemerides. The project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), aims to bridge gaps in observational data and improve geodetic and geophysical models. The successful candidate will collaborate with Leibniz University Hannover and Technical University Berlin to develop multi-technique software, analyze combined datasets, and address challenges like data gaps and parameter consistency. The role is part of the RING consortium, offering a dynamic research environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure and interdisciplinary collaboration.

What you'll do

  • Develop and apply multi-technique software for combining ring laser, VLBI, and LLR observations at the normal equation level, ensuring consistency across techniques.
  • Determine Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP) from combined data analysis, leveraging the strengths of each observing technique.
  • Accurately tie lunar ephemerides to the extragalactic frame and improve their determination through data integration.
  • Predict Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP) by analyzing complementary features of ring laser and space geodetic observations.
  • Address and mitigate the effects of data gaps in VLBI and LLR observations on combined analysis results.
  • Explore improvements in fundamental physics and relativistic parameters through the integration of ring laser, VLBI, and LLR data.
  • Design and conduct simulations of multiple ring lasers to quantify their impact on target parameters.
  • Collaborate closely with Leibniz University Hannover and Technical University Berlin on project tasks and data analysis.
