Overview

This PhD position at the University of Amsterdam focuses on investigating deep-sea benthic ecology in the Arctic Ocean, specifically how deep-sea life influences carbon cycling and climate regulation. The project, *C-CONNECT*, involves collaboration with Dutch and German research institutes, including NIOZ and the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). The successful candidate will conduct multi-week expeditions to the Arctic, collect and analyze samples, and integrate empirical data with computational modeling. The role emphasizes interdisciplinary teamwork, fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and dissemination of findings through publications and conferences. Applicants should have a passion for marine science, strong analytical skills, and the ability to thrive in remote and challenging environments.

What you'll do

  • Conduct multi-week field expeditions to the Arctic Ocean, including sample collection and preservation using advanced deep-sea technologies like ROVs.
  • Analyze large datasets combining 26-year time-series data with new benthic field experiments on carbon uptake and metabolism.
  • Perform laboratory analyses of deep-sea samples using state-of-the-art equipment to measure ecological processes.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at international conferences.
  • Synthesize research into a PhD thesis and assist in supervising undergraduate and master’s students.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across Dutch and German research institutions.
