PhD Student in Prospective Life Cycle Assessment (H/F)
Develop innovative methodologies for environmental impact assessment of emerging research programmes and technologies.
Best for:Best for engineers or scientists with a master’s in environmental engineering, life cycle assessment, or related fields, seeking to specialise in prospective environmental impact modelling and interdisciplinary research.
Overview
This PhD position at CNRS’s UTOPII unit focuses on advancing **Prospective Life Cycle Assessment (ACVp)** to evaluate environmental impacts of future research programmes and emerging technologies. The candidate will explore hybrid ACVp methods, model future scenarios (e.g., Business as Usual vs. Sobriété), and apply tools like PREMISE and stock-flow coherent models. Work will integrate with ongoing projects (e.g., ADEME PROgSPECT, ANR CYCLEM) and contribute to a methodological framework for assessing research programmes in engineering sciences. The role involves literature synthesis, scenario modelling, and collaborative research within a multidisciplinary environment.
What you'll do
- Conduct a literature review on ACVp applied to research programmes, focusing on future technological contexts.
- Analyse existing ACVp tools (e.g., PREMISE) and explore hybrid methods combining ACVp with extended input-output matrices (EEIO).
- Develop and model prospective scenarios (e.g., Business as Usual, Sobriété, and alternative trajectories) for emerging technologies in engineering (e.g., materials, nanotechnologies, electronics).
- Apply methodological frameworks to evaluate environmental impacts of a specific research programme (e.g., PEPR Réseaux du Futur).
- Collaborate with project teams (ADEME PROgSPECT, ANR CYCLEM) to refine and validate the methodological framework.
- Present research findings at conferences and publish results in scientific journals.
- Coordinate with UTOPII’s ongoing work to formalise a prospective environmental evaluation framework for research programmes.
