Specially Appointed Assistant Professor in Cryo-EM and Bacterial Pathogenesis
Join Osaka University’s CiDER to advance structural biology and infectious disease research using cryo-EM and bacterial secretion systems.
Best for:Best for structural biologists and microbiologists with cryo-EM experience seeking to contribute to cutting-edge infectious disease research in a collaborative academic environment.
Overview
This position at Osaka University’s newly established CiDER (Center for Infection and Defense Research) focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of bacterial nanodevices at host-pathogen interaction sites. The successful candidate will conduct structural analysis of protein complexes using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), while contributing to student mentorship and lab operations. The research team, led by Dr. Gabriel Nuñez and PI Shunroku Tachibana, targets the structural and functional analysis of bacterial secretion apparatuses, aiming to advance understanding of bacterial pathogenesis. The role is ideal for researchers with expertise in structural biology, microbiology, or biochemistry who are passionate about interdisciplinary infectious disease research.
What you'll do
- Conduct structural analysis of protein complexes using single-particle cryo-EM and cryo-ET techniques.
- Perform biological experiments including cell culture, protein purification, and genetic experiments.
- Participate in student mentorship and contribute to research lab management, including education and workstation administration.
- Promote and manage collaborative research projects with internal and external partners.
- Develop and implement research strategies to advance understanding of bacterial secretion apparatuses.
Requirements
Degree required: Doctoral degree (PhD) in Structural Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a related field, or expected to be obtained by the time of appointment.
Language: Japanese proficiency is not explicitly required, but English proficiency is essential for communication in an international research environment.
Instruction: English
- Proven research experience in structural biology, microbiology, or biochemistry.
- Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for conducting research using cryo-EM or cryo-ET.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Experience with biological experiments including cell culture, protein purification, and genetic experiments.
- Applicants must hold or be expected to obtain a doctoral degree by the time of appointment.
